I heard Chinese Teachers are getting a pay cut and thus resulting to an exodus of Chinese teachers. Is this true?

I heard it was something about getting higher pay but working lessor hours than other teachers? So they are trying to re-align the pay of the Chinese teachers? If this is true, it really would create huge problems bec there is already a lack of good Chinese teachers in St Jude, if you still cut their pay, it would discourage existing teachers to stay. How can they compare Chinese teachers to the English teachers. It's common demand and supply, there are only very few Chinese teachers so it is expected that you pay premium for Chinese teachers. So what's the problem? Didn't the school recognize the fact that parents send their kids to St Jude bec of the Chinese classes?

I heard if ever there is an exodus of HS Chinese teachers, they plan to hire mainlanders, lower pay but with free board and lodging. This is unfair to the old HS Chinese teachers. And a lot of the Mainlanders they hire are not teachers per se, thay are just native Mandarin speakers that have a hard time writing in Traditional Chinese Characters.
St. Jude, wake up. It doesn't mean that if you are a native Mandarin speaker, you are a Chinese teacher. Teaching is a skill. Our curriculum is Taiwan-based. SVD has affiliates in Taiwan like Fu Ren. Why not do something and get better teachers. Yung teachers talaga ang training!

Hiring Mainlanders as Chinese teachers does not necessarily make them better teachers. They also have to consider if they are able to relay the lessons to the students in an effective manner. Existing Chinese teachers have an advantage of speaking Filipino, English and even Hokkien to better teach the students. I think the sjcs administrators are making a big mistake in making the cut off the Chinese teachers' salary. It could mean an exodus of good and experienced teachers. They should recognize that a lot of parents send their children to St. Jude because of the Chinese. If the Chinese curriculum becomes affected by this, then it could mean a lot of exodus of students as well….

Heard the same thing. They made a HUGE pay cut for Chinese teachers, explaining that their additional hours shouldn't be overload but regular load pay.... Which made the Chinese teachers mad, so they're leaving too. Chinese teacher ranted about this on FB.

It is so hard to hire capable and competent teachers. Giving them more workload with lesser pay doesn't help at all. This will really force them to leave. Is the school trying to cheat us by hiring inexperienced and incompetent teachers? This really sad because our kids will be the one suffering. Ask the one who came up with that idea if he/ she can teach Chinese.

Agree to jadedselective. I remember my daughter'a Chinese teacher 陳老師, he is an alumni of SJ and he is a well liked teacher bec he explains his lesson very well to the kids. And to make it interesting, he would add jokes or games during his class. I remember my daughter coming home very happy of her Chinese class. Now, she has a mainland teacher who can't even explain the lesson. She is having difficulty and doesn't like Chinese as she used to .

Yes, Sunny. My daughter also had the same teacher, 陳 老 師. He was very, very effective. The kids love him and still sees him even after it has been a couple of years after being their teacher. I would be really saddened if he leaves because the school decided to cut his pay when he is doing a wonderful job in uplifting the school's standards. This is most especially so during this time when the school has had so many disappointing changes and decisions the past few years.

St jude should not hire mainlanders because students will have a hard time to understand their accents in teaching chinese. Another thing, parents will not be able to approach them if they have concerns about their children.

This is so wrong. I hope the school administration realizes it. Is this true for elementary or high school? Or both? Our children will be greatly affected by the exodus of good chinese teachers. Can PAG do something about this?

I heard it affects the H/S Chinese teachers, not the G/S Chinese teachers. Instead of giving the teachers their overload pay, they are going to cut and pay them regular load and hire more teachers from outside. Yun mga mainland teachers or those in the country for exchange, the school saves a lot from these kinds of teachers bec pay is low, no benefits, no separation, no retirement...they just need to provide dorm for these teachers. Ganun daw... so paano yun quality of the Chinese education? Every year or every couple of years, palit teachers, pagkatapos walang head teacher to lead these temps? How will they be guided on what to teach the kids?

I assume that was from a Chinese teacher? Them putting this down on writing is alarming. I appeal to the HSPAG to take constructive action. I believe they are best positioned to do so. An effective SJCS Chinese curriculum and an experienced and dedicated Chinese faculty are two of the pillars that makes SJCS a superior school.
